Our FREE Mandarin Chinese language immersion program is made possible through STARTALK, a government grant that promotes the teaching and learning of critical languages in the United States! Learn more about STARTALK here.

The program will meet Monday - Friday from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. with optional late pick-up until 4:00 p.m.

Open to students who will be entering 7th grade in August, 2024 to those who have just graduated high school in June, 2024.

Daily lunch and snack is FREE!

Students who successfully complete the program can earn 4 hours of college credit for Chinese 101 or 102.
CURRICULUM AND THEME
Daily instruction revolves around our program theme of Holidays and Celebrations. During the program, students will use the target language to participate in engaging cultural activities and create cultural products related to a variety of celebrations, festivals, and events. As we celebrate together, students will exchange information about their families, lives, and traditions with their peers and their Skype partners living in the Chinese and Arabic speaking world.
ELIGIBILITY
Students who will be in 7th grade through those who will be college freshmen in August of 2024 may apply. We offer classes for beginners and more advanced students and prior experience is not required for either language. Class placement is based on grade level and proficiency.
Queens University StarTalk welcomes applications from a diverse group of learners including traditional and home school students, heritage and non-heritage speakers, and students with disabilities. Accommodations can be arranged with the Program Director and our Student Accessibility Services (SAS) office.
PROGRAM STAFF
Our lead classroom instructors are qualified and credentialed teachers working in area public, private, and charter schools and Universities. Most of our teachers also have years of experience working with the StarTalk program. Several have a Masters or Doctorate degree in language, teaching, or other subject areas. Program administrators are professors at Queens University with years of foreign language teaching and StarTalk program administration experience. PROGRAM HISTORY
Queens University of Charlotte has offered StarTalk summer language immersion programs yearly since 2009. Chinese has been offered each year and Arabic was offered for the fifth year in 2019. Arabic will not be offered in 2024.
